ANTEN MILLS by Dennis Gannon

Did you do it? Did you remember to circle Friday May 27th on your calendar and save the date? If you didn’t it’s not too late. You don’t remember why you were to put a placeholder on that date? Well the Anten Mills Community Recreation Association in association with 8 80 Cities are going to have a Family Movie Night. Who are 8 80 Cities? 8 80 Cities are the consulting group that the Township of Springwater has engaged to gather information on the Community Hub that will eventually be built at the intersection of Bayfield St and Snow Valley Rd. Already in the works for this location are a new fire station headquarters, a paramedic base for the County of Simcoe and in the future a new library. But what else could this property have on it that everyone in the township could use? That’s where you come in. Should it have a therapy pool so that seniors and others with ailments can receive quality recreation programs in a warm environment? How about a woodcrafters workshop with wood working tools to allow the creativity of inspiring woodcrafters to work on their creations? Perhaps a curling rink, a couple of pickleball courts and a twin ice pad so that as a community we have those recreation facilities in our municipality instead of traveling to other locations. What should the outside grounds look like? Would an amphitheater enhance the location and allow for concerts and other events? How about a bike track or skateboard park? Should it be landscaped with native plants to encourage and keep alive our pollinators and recognize the heritage associated with the area? Perhaps community garden space and walking trails that intersect with other nearby trails. These are just some of the many ideas that can be suggested along with others you and members of your family can make and do so in person at the Family Movie Night on May 27.

Through some generous donations this just isn’t going to be a movie night. This will be an interactive evening for people of all ages. Rad Adventures is going to have their super fun rad bike trax there. The track will have rad rollers, big kahunas and rad launchers. This fun track will have the kids and perhaps some adults, biking with lots of energy and laughs. Have you wondered about getting a woodfired pizza oven and how delicious the food could be but didn’t know where to learn more? Outdoor Pizza Ovens will have a mobile outdoor woodfired pizza oven on location so that you can observe how they operate and the food that can be created. Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint is supplying the pizzas that are going to be cooked up that night, tasted and  enjoyed. There will also be donuts from the Elmvale Bakery for dessert. And during the family rated movie, popcorn will be available thanks to the Springwater Library. All of this is offered at no charge so why not come? 8 80 Cities representatives will be there to talk to you about how you can help design and envision this new community hub that will be created for those from 9 months to 90 years of age. Wouldn’t this be a great way to end the week and kick off the weekend in the village? The event is on Friday, May 27 from 6 to 8:30 PM when the movie will start. The location is the Anten Mills Community Centre and Park, 3985 Horseshoe Valley Rd West, Anten Mills. All community members should make every effort to stop by and offer their suggestions and enjoy the evening. We look forward to seeing our neighbours from Minesing, Apto Ferguson and Phelpston there as well. Follow the Anten Mills Community Facebook page for updates.

The Movie Night will be the last of the engagement sessions before a report is drafted and presented to Springwater Council. If you are not able to attend there are other opportunities in the next couple of weeks. Check out the Township of Springwater website, Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter for details on how to speak with the representatives or complete the survey online. This is the future for our municipality, be a part of the future.

Last year Communities Connecting for Children ran their first Kids Got Talent event and they are back again with another virtual contest this year. Communities Connecting for Children is a registered non profit organization that a number of members from our community are involved with. In the past year they have purchased what was the Girl Guide Camp on Gill Road and are in the process of transforming it into a safe location where outdoor programs can be provided. The Kids Got Talent contest runs from May 1 to June 21. As a virtual event, videos are judged based on 3 different age categories from 4 to 12+. There will be weekly draw prizes along with First and Runner Up prizes in the 3 age categories. To get more information check their social media accounts or their website https://communitiesconnectingforchildren.weebly.com/

Our amazing community member, Marjan DeJong Deller raised over $12,000 in the recent Hike for Hospice. Thank you to all who donated to Marjan’s effort. We are proud to have such an outstanding individual in our community who helps those families facing the last days of life. Congratulations Marjan!

That’s it for this week, plan to attend on May 27th and until then, Thanks for Reading and Be Well!
