Smile Cookie Campaign For Elmvale Foodbank – By Debbie Craddick
Apr. 1, 2024 – Since 2020 our very generous and supportive local Tim Hortons has donated over $30,000 to the Elmvale & District Food Bank?
Once again this year we are fortunate to be the recipient of their Smile Cookie Campaign. The campaign runs from April 29th to May 5th. Please support the food bank through Tim Hortons and enjoy one of their yummy treats.
We are grateful to have received many donations over the Easter season. A few to mention were from Andrew, who donated with proceeds from his online game week, Wyevale Lions Club Annual Easter Egg Hunt and the Anten Mills CRA Easter Run who collected cash and food items in support of the food bank, and Wyevale United Church who received monetary donations and presented them to the food bank.
Perhaps when shopping you would consider purchasing an extra item or two to donate. Following is a list of most needed items:
o Individual applesauce/puddings
o Drinking boxes
o Canned beef gravy and canned turkey gravy
o Pancake syrup and Pancake mix
o Cream of chicken soup
o Canned meats (NOT tuna)
o Men’s soap, Any Shampoo

EDHS Class of 1982 Reunion – Submitted by Darrin Robertson
The EDHS Grade 12 Class of 1982 is holding a Reunion to mark the 40+ years since their graduation.
If you were an EDHS “Minor Niner” in 1978, we are hoping you will join us.
We are gathering all classmates from this memorable EDHS era who attended from Grade 9 (September 1978) to Grade 12 (June 1982)
If you were a student with this group or a teacher to this group during this time, we look forward to you attending. It will be a time to reunite and share some high school memories.
The date is Friday June 14, 2024.
We will meet at Elmvale District High School to have a tour of the upgraded facilities at 4pm.
At 5pm, we will catch up with classmates at the Elmvale Legion, followed by food and social in downtown Elmvale. More details to come.
Saturday at 9am, join us for a Best Ball Golf Tournament with lunch following.

Elmvale Cat Rescue and Feline Fix Need Your Empties

Apr. 19, 2024 – The Communication Officer for the non-profit cat rescue called Feline Fix Barrie. Their mandate is to reduce the community cat population through spaying and neutering feral cats.
The Elmvale Cat Rescue was struggling to get their colony fixed to prevent more kittens from being born. Feline Fix offered help and, since Sept. 20, 2023, they have trapped 30 adults and 17 kittens. There are still two adults left to get, and they are very smart. Two cats have already found their forever homes, and there are 13 cats in foster care being socialized so that they, too, can find their forever homes.
The expense of the above work is huge. It was necessary, though, or that colony would have exploded because the Elmvale Cat Rescue couldn’t afford to fix any of the cats. Feline Fix Barrie does a lot of fundraising, but we still have a very large bill for this colony left to pay.
They hope to hold an “empties” drive in Elmvale town to raise some money, plus we will be a vendor at the Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival later this month. They sell vegan leather wallets/purses, as well as funky socks and some items made by volunteers. All monies raised will go toward paying down the bill for the Elmvale spays/neuters and other surgeries. A number of the cats have required dental surgeries.
When the community learns about the number of cats that have been taken out of the colony and the number that remain but that have been fixed, perhaps they will consider dropping off empties, visiting us at the Maple Syrup Festival, and/or making a donation to Feline Fix Barrie to help them with the bill.
The colony is located behind the Corner Cut Salon owned by Janice Minnings.
Local residents Dar McLean (main colony feeder) and Linda Wasitis (wanted to help the colony and joined our rescue) have been helping us:
- Dar made a quilt, a Christmas wall hanging and a door welcome snowman that we raffled off to raise funds. Finally, Dar offered to foster the last cat that was trapped, a huge help because it is hard to find someone willing to foster a scared cat.
- Dar and Linda helped trap the cats and transport them to Barrie for vetting.
Our main trapper from our rescue is Kelly Collard.
We have tried trapping the final two grey cats with two types of traps – neither worked. We have set up a 4 x 8 ft. trap that Feline Fix made years ago to get a sick feral. We are hoping this will work to get the last, very smart kitties.

April 23, 2024 – On April 14 a special Welcome Spring Luau was held at St. Johns United Church, Elmvale. Pictured are some of the attendees dressed in bright Hawaiian colors and enjoying Luau style food, games and music. What Fun!The Goodwill offering collected has been contributed to the GoFundMe account for Emma. She is the little daughter of Ryan & Amanda who own Elmvale Foodland, and is in Sick Kids battling leukemia.
Foodbank Festival Fundraiser

April 25, 2024 – As many of us are aware the Foodbank is not only in need of food but they also require money so that they can purchase other goods that are often overlooked when we stare into our pantries for the purposes of donation.
Some of you may possibly recognize this familiar face in the photograph. If not, let me reintroduce myself.
You might recall seeing me in Whitfield’s Guardian Pharmacy as owner for 31 years ….and then I seemed to have disappeared!
Well not entirely, but to say I’ve been less than visible would be an understatement. Amazingly it will be 10 years as of April 28th since I sold the pharmacy!
Wearing my other hat, as photographer, I’ve had an idea about fundraising for worthy local causes ever since I retired, but have failed to implement it. The idea is simply “Photolanthropy”….a word that I have entirely made up, but which hopefully needs no explanation.
I am donating this 16”x 24” canvas mounted Maple Syrup Festival themed photograph, that I have entitled “Sap’s Running”, to enable the Foodbank to raise funds to benefit those, in the area, who are less fortunate.
The photo will be on display at Whitfield’s Guardian Pharmacy, leading up to the Maple Syrup Festival and you can purchase tickets there ($5 each or 3 for $10)…..or why don’t you peak your head in the doors at the main entrance to the arena on festival day, from 10 am-4 pm, and you will likely be able to catch up with this retired pharmacist/photographer….or at the very least you will have an opportunity to sling insults at me….and hopefully buy a ticket (or 6:).

Sara Vista Flower Donation – By Susanne Flury
April 17, 2024 – On Wednesday April 17th, Bunches of Blooms made a Flower donation to Sara Vista Long-term Care Home in Elmvale.
I, Susanne Flury, owner and grower at Bunches of Blooms have donated flowers to Sara Vista in the past, especially during Covid.
It brings me great joy and I feel grateful that I am able share my locally seasonal grown flowers with the residents at the home.
Colorful flowers lift your spirits, they put a smile on your face and brighten up any space with their beauty.
15 Mason jars were filled with double and peony tulips for each dining room table at Sara Vista Long Term Care Home.
Looking forward to be sharing more seasonal flowers with the residents for the upcoming flower season and spread some joy.
