By Kim McNabb

The Elmvale Coyotes U15 Local League team would like to thank Beacock’s Auto Service for sponsoring our team.

While the team may have been slow off the starting line, they have really picked up the pace with some fine tuned tweaking. The competition that they’ve been up against has been tough but it’s been a fun-filled and exciting season so far. The pit crew is comprised of a deep bench staff including two U18 players who help out with coaching and support at practices. The team spirit has really come alive with the entire team cheering on each others’ successes, both big and small. Each goal, each save, each defensive interception, each pass and each well executed play is celebrated by the fans, kids, and coaches alike. The team’s combined efforts have been a true example of what teamwork is meant to be and the rewards all the more satisfying. The Beacock’s Auto Service Team has had the fans on the edges of their seats and on their feet! Each team member is committed to putting in the time  and effort at practice ingraining their skilled maneuvers and applying them to the game plan with precision. With a passion to play their best game, the team is rounding the last bend

into the final stretch of the season, gaining speed with every lap (and every practice). The plays are coming together and they are ending the season strong with no inclination of tapping the brakes. It’s full out to the finish line!

BMR Pro Brae-Con Building Supplies Elmvale Coyotes Dominate

By Kim Sokach

Mar. 11, 2024 – The team led by Head Coach John Seney, Assistant Coach Cullen Fay and Trainers Kris Golka and Gord Kiernan have had an amazing start to the 2024 Playoff Season.  This team has shown great growth throughout the season and have proved that with hard work and perseverance anything is possible.

The BMR Pro U18D (YOTES) team started the playoffs February 10th at home against the Huntsville Otters U18D in Elmvale.  This season these two teams have had a few dust ups, but the YOTES (U18) fought hard with Josh Pickering and Jack Clemens each scoring in the first period.  Both teams fought hard for goals in the 2nd period with no luck but in the 3rd period Huntsville tied up the game.  The BMR Pro Coyotes played their game of passing and playing as a strong team and Jack Clemens scored the winning goal with 11 second left on the clock.  Game 1 in the bag!

On February 17th the YOTES traveled to Owen Sound to challenge the Jr. Attack U18C team.  The Coyotes started the game with Keagan Hummelink scoring 1:25 minutes into the game.  This was followed by a goal from Josh Pickering and a second goal from Hummelink all in the first period.  The Jr. Attack held off the YOTES during the second and third periods scoring in the 3rd to make the final score 3-1 for the YOTES.

The YOTES made the trip to Shelburn to play the Wolves U18D team on February 23rd.  Showing off their defense skills the YOTES held off the attacking wolves with their amazing goalie showing off his skills.  One and half minutes into the second period Willem Kiernan scored the first goal of the game.  With 2.5 minutes left on the clock Josh Pickering scored in the 3rd period and the game ended with goalie William Veenstra’s first shutout of the playoffs.

February 25th saw the YOTES and their fans on the road to play against the Parry Sound Shamrocks U18D team.  The fans were cheering for their boys and keeping it positive in the stands and the YOTES showed all how they work together as a team and stand up for each other when needed.  The YOTES came off the bench with determination and energy with Willem Kiernan scoring the first goal after 1 minute 11 seconds of play.  The Shamrocks scored a goal but that did not stop the YOTES with Josh Pickering scoring 2 goals before the end of the period.  Josh scored a Hat Trick 15 seconds into the 2nd period, with Evan Buchanan and Carter Aubrey changing the score to 6-1 at the end of the 2nd.  The 3rd period saw both teams determined to defend their nets and it got heated on the ice, but the YOTES came out on top with a final score of 6-1.

The first 4 games of our playoffs season have been exciting and we are looking forward to the rest of playoffs and the YOTES have shown that working as a team with a strong coaching team, offense and defense they can achieve great things!  Go YOTES!

The BMR Pro U18D YOTES won 2 more games and tied their final game.  They will be playing in the semi finals the week of March 4th.

Elmvale Coyotes U8 Selects Hit Steel Town With Their Own Big Hammer

Submitted By Jon Popple, Head Coach

Mar. 4, 2024 – On the weekend of Feb 18th and 19th, 2024, the Elmvale Coyotes U8 Select Team travelled to Hamilton to take part in the Hamilton Steel U8 MD Future Stars Tournament.  The U8 Select team was formed late in the season and its roster made up of 11 players selected from Elmvale’s two U8 LL Teams.  The select team was able to have a couple practices and host one game against the Oro Thunder U8 Tier 1 team prior to the weekend away in Hamilton.

The team entered the tournament not knowing what competition they would face, but the young upstart team was ready for the challenge.  The team would play six (6), twenty-two (22) minute games during the tournament.  In game 1 they faced the U8 MD Hamilton Huskies #1, a AA centre from the host city.  The boys showed some nerves to start the game, but the first ten minutes of the game was a back and forth battle between both teams with Elmvale’s goalie Blake McNaughton making some huge saves to keep the score blanked at 0-0.  The game would remain scoreless until less that 3 minutes remained in the game when off a fast break down the ice Wyatt Coughlin broke the stalemate and got Elmvale on the board with its first goal of the tournament.  After facing more hot shots off the Huskies sticks, McNaughton turned away everything thrown at him.  With 2:00 remaining in the game and Elmvale’s four skaters out for their last shift of the game they headed down the ice with Scott Popple leading the charge with the puck on his stick.  With 1:22 left in the game Popple fired the puck over the goalies glove to register the team’s second goal of the game.  The teams battled during the last minute and McNaughton was solid in maintaining his first career shutout.   The Coyotes went on to face Hamilton Huskies #2 in the second game of the tournament, with the nerves shaken out and their legs ready to skate it was a high scoring affair with Elmvale outscoring their big city opponent 9-5 in the second game.  McNaughton made more big saves in the second game with Elmvale’s goals being scored by Draper Temolder (2), Noah Antiquera, Reef Tschop McLaren (2), Landon Phillips and rounding out the scoring with a hat trick was Wyatt Coughlin (3).  The coaches were impressed with the teams play and going 2-0 to open the tournament.

In game 3 and 4 the Coyotes would face their toughest challenge of the weekend from the Haldimand River Kings U8 MD teams.  These two teams from an “A” centre were comprised of the 20 best players selected from Caladonia, Cayuga, Dunnville & Hagersville’s four Minor Hockey Associations.  In game 1 Elmvale was able to open the scoring of the game at 16:57, with some strong passing that resulted in a goal off the stick of Wyatt Coughling for his 5th of the tournament.  Elmvale battled hard over the remainder of the game with Blake McNaughton making eleven (11) great saves, but the River Kings were able to sneak 3 pucks past the Coyotes goalie to take the game 3-1.  In the second game Elmvale faced an even faster River Kings squad who got out to an early lead and didn’t look back.  The River Kings played hard and took the game 6-0, but the spotlight was once again on the Coyotes goalie who faced 22 shots and made 16 big saves in the tough loss.

In the final 2 games of the day the U8 Selects faced teams from another AA Centre the Richmond Hill Jaguars.  The team was ready for two hard fought games to end the day in Hamilton.  They hit the ice in the 5th game against the Jaguars and the play went up and down the ice, with both goalies making some big saves, but at the 20:11 mark Wyatt Coughlin opened the scoring for Elmvale with his 6th goal of the Tournament.  Richmond Hill would answer back with 3 quick goals making the score 3-1 after 10 minutes.  Strong Play continued from both teams and with 8 minutes remaining Austin Perreault responded for Elmvale with his first goal of the weekend to make the score 3-2 Richmond Hill.  Richmond Hill went on to score another 2 goals to win the game 5-2.  The game did feature some strong defensive play from Chase Culbert, Scott Haines, Noah Antiquera and Scott Popple, not mention another 12 saves by McNaughton in net.

The final match versus Richmond Hill it was a tight checking affair with both teams giving up no ground to the other.  But finally at the 17:00 min mark Wyatt Coughlin opened the scoring for Elmvale with a breakaway goal getting past the Jaguars net minder for his 7th of the tournament.  Not long after Noah Antiquera followed up with his own breakaway goal to make the score 2-0 for Elmvale on Antiquera’s 2nd goal of the tournament.  The game was fast paced with lots of shots being fired at both goalies.  After a quick flurry of shots and strong play Richmond Hill took the lead with a 3-2 score.  With 5:00 minutes remaining in the game Popple moved the puck up the boards and found Antiquera alone in front of the Jaguar net where he lifted the puck over the goalies left pad to tie the game at 3’s.  Elmvale skated hard in the last 5 minutes but couldn’t’ get one past the Jaguar’s backstop and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Elmvale U8 Selects finished the tournament with a 2-3-1 record and faced some tough big city competition, the players all played strong offensive and defensive games, while showing that small town hockey is still alive and well.  The coaching staff was very proud of the teams play and looks forward to our next tournament back in Hamilton on April 1st, for the Glancaster Bombers Year End Tournament.
