NS Springwater News Found Over the Pond

By Michael Jacobs, previous owner of the Springwater News, Oct. 10, 2025.

Michael and Margaret Ann Jacobs (along with his sister Sheila Burk and her husband Bob), took a 19 day holiday and cruise. It started in Barcelona, Spain spanned through France, Italy, Malta, Greece, Croatia and ended in Austria. This was a double whammy for the Jacobs pair as it was their first time in most of these countries where some of the buildings were built well over 1000 years ago and a first time on a cruise with 3900 other people plus the 1500 person crew. While in Venice, where there are no cars, only canals and streets barely six feet wide, we rode the Gondola (a boat) and found a copy of the NS Springwater News.

HCES Kicks Off Fall With Music, Movement and Community Spirit

By Emma Cole and Charlotte Laurin, Huronia Centennial Elementary School Grade 5 Students

We are off to a great start at HCES this Fall. We have already done so much!

The band and choir are already up and practicing once a week. They have been practicing their singing and playing and performed at the Elmvale Fall Fair.

We had our school Terry Fox run and we raised over $3,000.00. We all ran our hardest to finish it for Terry. We participated in different activities like running through bubbles, doing the limbo, crawling through a tunnel, dancing and collecting stickers for each lap that we ran.  Thank you to our Grade 6 Leaders who helped to organize this very meaningful event.

On September 30th, we had Orange Shirt Day and everyone was wearing their orange shirts. As a school we learned about Phyllis Webstad who is a residential school survivor and creator of Orange Shirt Day. We learned about the history of residential schools and the importance of Orange Shirt Day. Grade 6 students provided all students and staff with an orange handprint to write a message or draw a picture on in honour of Orange Shirt Day.  All students and staff posted their orange hands on the wall in a heart spelling the word “Truth” in the hallway.

Another big event this past month was preparing for the Elmvale Fall Fair. We spent time practicing our marching skills for the parade and making crafts, Lego models, interestingly shaped fruits and vegetables and baking to enter in all of the fun contests that happen at the Fall Fair. Some HCES students even showed their animals. We were lucky to have a perfect sunny day for the parade and the fair after.  A big thank you goes out to Linda Murray for all her organization with the schools and fair exhibits.

Students have also been doing lots of running this fall. HCES participated in the Fun Run for students in Grades 1-3 along with over 17 other schools on October 17th.  Huronia had a team of over 90 runners.  The course was a one kilometre run through the trails at the Education Centre in Midhurst.  Each runner was awarded a ribbon, a juice box and a granola bar.

Grades 4-6 students on the HCES Cross Country team competed at Little Lake Park on October 14th with over 60 students representing our school.  Everyone did a great job finishing a difficult course. We had impressive finishes with some HCES students in the top three in their category!  30 students will move on to the County level and compete on the challenging course that Mount St. Louis offers.  Thank you to our wonderful Volunteers who have helped with our many events.  We couldn’t do it without your help!

Stay tuned for our next update. Thanks for reading!
