The Scoop- by Linda Belcourt, Editor
I appreciated the spirited feedback on the July 17, 2025 edition of the North Simcoe Springwater News. Heidi Currie’s letter certainly sparked conversation — from lively discussions in local coffee shops to a buzz on social media.
NS Springwater News wants to hear from you! Let your voice be heard!
I’m always amazed at how boldly some people express their opinions on social media while hiding behind a screen, using it like a shield of cowardice.
If have something to say, say it directly to the person. I had a concerned resident send an opinion editorial to my Ontario Community Newspaper Association regarding Township of Springwater. It did not just go to the association but to Gordon Cameron, the Executive director. Gordon is a very supportive of this paper and the professionals in this association are as well.
For context, here’s what the OCNA actually provides its members:
The Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) provides a broad range of services to its members, with key offerings including:
Ad*Reach: OCNA’s advertising division, placing display and insert ads in member newspapers on behalf of advertisers, agencies, and governments.
Webinar Series: Ongoing educational sessions covering software training and workplace management skills.
Government Relations: Advocacy to ensure Ontario’s community newspapers are represented at the provincial and municipal levels.
NewsClips: A digital publication featuring industry news, updates, and information about upcoming OCNA services and events.
Press Cards: Authorized photo press cards issued to members.
Membership in News Media Canada: OCNA membership includes automatic membership in News Media Canada, offering national communication, conferences, and federal advocacy.
Canadian Media Protective Association: Administered by OCNA, this program provides group media insurance covering libel, piracy, and plagiarism.
Additionally, OCNA emphasizes the value of events, awards, and training courses for professional development and networking.
