OPINION: Why I Can No Longer Stay Neutral

As the editor of this newspaper, I’ve always tried to keep a clear line between fact and opinion. The news pages will always remain unbiased, factual, and rooted in evidence. That commitment has not changed and never will.
But I can no longer remain silent in the opinion pages. Our political environment is uncertain and I feel motivated to stand up for you.  I am a reliable resource of communication to many communities, that would not get information otherwise.

I feel a responsibility to tell you what’s happening when things are unchallenged — to shine a light on stories others won’t tell. That includes my own. I’ve experienced intimidation. I’ve been threatened. While I have carried those burdens quietly, the time has come to speak up.

What you will read in these pages from now on will be the bold truth, no unproven accusations, no reckless claims. But I will no longer pretend that “neutrality” means silence in the face of injustice or wrongdoing.

I wasn’t just invited, I was honoured with a scholarship selected from among all weekly newspaper editors across Canada to attend the ISWNE (International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors) Conference in South Dakota and shouldered with some great media barons in United States.

I was nervous to travel to the USA. I have heard stories of electronic device searches at the border. It was terrifying that my rights would be violated. The political climate in the USA is unsettling, but I didn’t let that stand in the way of an incredible opportunity to learn from the very best.

I am part of a team of professionals and have access to editorial advise as part of the Ontario Newspaper Community Association. I have a responsibility to watch dog the people making choice for us that affect us the most.

Send me your bold opinions.
