Nature Experiences for Seniors in the Township of Tiny

If you live in or around the Township of Tiny, you already know how lucky we are to be surrounded by beautiful beaches, parks, trails, and outdoor spaces. As the summer winds down and cooler weather sets in, it’s a great time to remind ourselves of the benefits of spending time in nature; especially for older adults.

The Township of Tiny’s Recreation and Special Events Department is proud to offer a variety of outdoor programs designed specifically for seniors. These programs promote active aging, community connection, and the joy of being outdoors.

Introducing Nature Connect: Outdoor Adventures for Seniors

This new four-part initiative, funded by the Government of Ontario’s Senior Community Grant Program, is all about helping older adults stay active, engaged, and connected to nature. Here’s what’s included:

  1. Free Guided Outdoor Excursions

We’ve partnered with Free Spirit Tours to offer a series of free excursions at Tiny Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area. These outings are a wonderful way to try something new, meet others, and enjoy the outdoors. Upcoming excursions include:

  • Learn to Kayak – Thursday, September 18 | 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Wild Edibles Foraging Experience – Tuesday, September 30 | 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Forest Therapy Walk – Wednesday, October 15 | 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Hiking – Friday, October 24 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Snowshoeing – Thursday, February 19 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  1. 8-Week Slow Sensory Walking Series

Wednesdays from September 17 to November 5 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Led by certified Forest Therapy Guide Karen Chaplin, this weekly walking program invites participants to slow down, engage their senses, and connect with nature. Karen brings a wealth of experience in community service, horticulture, and wellness. Each session ends with time for socializing and light refreshments at the common area. Each session takes place at Tiny Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area.

  1. Sport Loaner Kit Program

Thanks to the Seniors Community Grant, residents can now borrow Urban Poling Walking Poles and/or Snowshoes free of charge! The Township’s Sport Loaner Kit Program is now available throughout the Fall and Winter. Residents can borrow a set of Urban Poling Walking Poles (with your choice of tips or snow baskets), a set of Snowshoes, or both to stay moving throughout the colder months. Pick up a Sport Loaner at www.tiny.ca/playportal kit to enjoy your own outdoor adventure!

  1. Become a Nature Connect Volunteer Ambassador

Do you love the outdoors and want to give back to your community? We’re looking for four enthusiastic volunteers to help lead and support our programs with the goal of starting and sustaining a new inclusive community walking group. Ambassadors will:

  • Receive Standard First Aid and CPR-C training
  • Complete the Urban Poling Canada Instructor Course, learning how to lead welcoming and accessible walking groups
  • Receive a free set of Urban Poles to practice and advocate for active living in their community.

Previous experience supporting group activities or outdoor programs is an asset but not required. To learn more or to volunteer, visit tiny.ca/volunteer or contact seniors@tiny.ca.
