Anten Mills News – By Dennis Gannon

If you have been out and about late last week, you may have noticed that we were treated to a spectacular scene. Normally we see lots of yellows when the trees change their colour in the fall. This year however the colours were more orange, burnt orange, red and yellow. The rain and grey skies made them stand out even more. Soon the leaves will all be on the ground but while we can, let’s enjoy the beauty that the fall brings. For those who may have a large number of pine trees on their property, we will be watching to see who wins the “pine needle” olympics that Brian wrote about in his Anten Mills Celebrating 150 Years stories.

There are two special events occurring this weekend in the community. First tomorrow night, Friday October 24 it’s the 3rd annual Witches Walk with a live band. This is a fun adult evening starting at 6:45 when the Witches of the community get dressed in their worst attire and walk in unison throughout the village. Of course many are dressed in amazing costumes and then there are those who are the evil ones and dress very scary. When back at the community centre the evening carries on with the band Bombshell rocking the pavilion with their great music until 10:30. If you don’t wish to get dressed in costume that’s not a problem so plan on coming out and having an adult fun night with your neighbours and friends. Admission is by cash donations to offset the cost of the band and hot dogs, soft drinks and chips will be available.

On Sunday there will be pumpkin carving, dancing, games and crafts for the younger set as the Kids Halloween Party takes place. Starting at 11 and going to 1 the volunteers have activities to keep everyone busy. Costumes are welcome as there is a photo booth to create memories. Loot bags will be handed out at the end along with the pumpkin that you carved. There will be pizza slices available for sale and preregistration is requested to ensure that there are sufficient treat bags to hand out. There is no charge for the kids to attend and as our community continues to support the Elmvale and District Food Bank, those attending are asked to bring a generous donation to support them. More details can be found on the Anten Mills Community Bulletin Facebook page.

Did you know that very soon the sun will set around 5PM and then even earlier? On Sunday, November 2 the sun sets just after 5PM. Sunday, November 2 is also the day we return to Standard Time. At 2AM that morning we turn our clocks back one hour until March 8. When we turn our clocks back it is also a good time for some housekeeping and to replace the batteries in our smoke alarms. Remember as well that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years so check the date on your alarms and if they are 10 or more years old, go get some new ones.

The Springwater Vespra Lions Club are having their Pumpkinpalooza on November 2 just outside Midhurst that day. After the Jack o Lanterns have done their duty head out to the Pumpkinpalooza with them and see them fly high and return to nature. More details can be found on our facebook page.

Are you aware that October 31 there are two special occasions that occur? Obviously the first is Halloween and all the fun associated with it. The second is one that we all should participate in. The last Friday in October, which this year is the 31st, is also the start of the Remembrance Day Poppy Campaign. Starting that day and up to Remembrance Day we honour those who gave their lives for our freedom and to those who served by wearing a poppy. It is an outward sign of our respect for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for all. Poppies are not sold. You are asked to give a donation and they are available at many locations around the area so please donate generously and wear a poppy.

On Tuesday, November 11 we will remember our veterans at the Remembrance Day services. Last year a new group of volunteers helped to organize the Remembrance Day service held at Springwater Provincial Park. The group has been working actively to ensure that a meaningful and special service is being held again this year. There is complimentary park admission that day and for those with mobility concerns a disability parking area. Under the pines in the park the cenotaph sits in memory of the Vespra Boys who during WW1 lost their lives and didn’t come home. Everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be available thanks to the Midhurst CRA. Should you wish more information about the service feel free to contact Joan by email at sweetgannon@gmail.com.

That’s all for this week. THANKS for READING, STAY WELL and BE SAFE.
