Anten Mills News – By Dennis Gannon

While the weather specialists were suggesting that it was a possibility, many didn’t want to believe that we were really going to get a measurable amount of snow. But it did come and for a couple of days the bleak scenery was white and bright. There is no suggestion that there will be any significant snow for a while but hopefully there will be sunshine to keep our short days bright. From today until December 22, we will see approximately 35 minutes less of daylight. On December 22 the sun starts to return in our direction and we gain 2 seconds of daylight and by January 1, we are almost ahead 1 full minute.

Of course snow would be nice for the Anten Mills Christmas in the Village which is coming quickly. Saturday, December 13 will see our 11th Tree Lighting when the large tree at the Community Centre will be lit up by more than 1000 multi-colour lights and the ground displays will be turned on. Snow Valley Ski Resort will be there with the Sno-tube slide which the kids thoroughly enjoy. To top the night off, the sky will come alive with the ever popular fireworks display. Of course who does everyone want to see and they won’t be disappointed as on good authority the Anten Mills Community Recreation Association has been advised that Santa Claus will be coming with the firefighters. There is no charge for this fun evening but everyone is encouraged to bring donations for the Elmvale and District Food Bank.

Then on Sunday it’s the 28th annual Santa Claus parade. This is the longest continuous event in our community and usually the last parade of the year. Running through the village it is very much a celebration as families and friends gather together to celebrate the season. Already there have been 7 confirmed entries and as we get closer hopefully there will be more. If you would like to join us, send an email to antenmillschristmas@gmail.com to get more details.

With all community events they cannot go on without the support of volunteers. The CRA is grateful for all assistance and there is definitely a need for the tree lighting. If you can help out, send an email to the address above or Message me directly.

Before our big event the Elmvale and District Food Bank along with the Barrie Food Bank will welcome the CPKC Holiday Train on Sunday, November 30. Last year the train was cancelled due to safety concerns. Springwater Township has made some safety improvements with parking and a shuttle bus to get visitors to the site safely. CPKC makes a generous donation to the food banks and donations will be accepted by the food bank at the event. More details will be posted on the Anten Mills Community Bulletin Facebook page and as well on the Springwater Township website where details on parking and shuttle service are available. Take the family and check this great event out.

Leading up to the holidays, many will remember that television classic, Frosty the Snowman. Then of course there is Frozen, the movie released in 2013 with the great line, “ Do you want to build a Snowman?”  Well here in Anten Mills the question is, will Dennis Laycock build his massive snowman this season? Of course there is the need for packing snow and lots of it and some encouraging words for Dennis. A lot of work goes into building and maintaining the snowman so encouraging him to continue this tradition will help. In the past many visitors have stopped by to take pictures with the snowman and the Laycock family has no issues with that. Here’s a little teaser. What if the snowman has a name this year and those having photos can make a difference with a donation? Perhaps in early January there may be some good news!

In past articles the golfing adventures of young Anten Mills resident, Chloe Hassberger has been featured. Recently Chloe was invited to play in a national golf championship in Orlando Florida. Chloe played golf against top players from across Canada and after 3 days of golf, placed 3rd. With that Chloe now goes to California in February to golf as part of Team Canada in a Tri Nations Cup with players coming from Canada, Mexico and the United States. Well done Chloe and best wishes on the upcoming tournament!

Thinking about the holiday season, did you miss the opportunity to get some Anten Mills Celebrating 150 Years swag. Or perhaps the original Anten Mills gear. Don’t delay and as you can order it directly from the supplier. Head over to the https://antenmills.justadd10.com website and check out the selection. There is still a small selection of coffee mugs, tumblers and tote bags available here in the community. If you’re interested Message me or send an email to antenmills150@gmail.com.

Looking for a fresh cut Christmas tree for your home this year? For over 30 years the members of the South Springwater Fire Fighters Association have been selling top quality trees for the holidays. This year they will be continuing their tradition with fir trees for sale starting Saturday, November 29 at the Ice Cream Hut on Bayfield St. Funds from this sale help support the local charities that the firefighters give to.
