In Loving Memory of Esko Vartiainen
We sadly announce the passing of Esko Vartiainen, a loving husband, devoted father, proud “Ukki,” and a man of true Finnish sisu (grit and perseverance). Esko left us peacefully on September 27, 2025, at the age of 87, in Penetanguishene, Ontario. Esko’s journey began in Lappeenranta, Finland on October 31, 1937. He brought his adventurous spirit to Toronto, where he later met and fell in love with Marita, his beloved wife of over 50 years. Esko was a steadfast father to Jari, Jussi, Larry, and Christel, and their family was lovingly completed when he formally adopted their youngest son, Shawn, as a toddler. In the mid-1970s, the family moved to Midland, where Esko’s entrepreneurial spirit thrived. Through his businesses—from Sunnyside Upholstering to Esko Tops and Canvas Products, and later the Midland Bay Marina—he exemplified the values he taught: honesty, hard work, and finishing what you start. His faith became a cornerstone of his life in the last few decades, and he was a deeply committed member of the Pentecostal church. His quiet presence, unique sense of humour, and unwavering support will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. He was a proud Ukki to his cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Kyle, Heili, Lucas and Amelia. He will live on in our hearts forever. Please join us to celebrate Esko’s life and share our memories at The Shores Community Church, 256 Queen Street, Victoria Harbour, on Saturday, October 25th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at the church. For those who wish, donations in Esko’s memory can be made to The Shores Community Church through My Charity Fund – Georgian Shores Community Church.
