Dr. Robert Martin Stone, MD, FRCSC, FACS

Quietly, after a cardiac event, our beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather Bob, passed peacefully on April 26th, 2024.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary Stone (nee Morrison), children Michael (Jom), Julie (Gerrit), Jennie (Jeffrey) and Jason (Katie) Stone, and pre-deceased by his oldest son Paul (Natalie).  He loved his six grandchildren Shannon, Connor, Oscar, Edie, Chloe, and Iris and his two great granddaughters Teagan and Rory.

Robert Martin Stone was born on December 7th, 1940, to Mildred and Martin Stone in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He was the oldest of six children and is survived by his best friend and brother Bill (Darlene), Maryanne (Roberto), Stephen (Debbie), John Paul (Susanne) and Mark (Chris).

He had a very illustrious career after completing his medical degree at Queen’s University in 1964.  Following his start at the Toronto General Hospital, he became the Surgeon-in Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital.  He went on to serve as Surgeon-in-Chief at the Toronto Western Hospital and from 1993-2006 he was the Head of the Department of Surgery at Dalhousie University where he became Professor Emeritus upon retirement.

His many accolades include several awards for his excellence in teaching.  He was the Vice President of Education at the Toronto Hospital and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. His guidance and support of students from medical school to post-graduate fellowship have been long celebrated.  All remember the ‘Stone-look’ over his bifocals that molded the medical experts of today. His acumen and support for research shaped medical education and innovation.

Bob’s insight, warmth, sense of humor, empathy, and ability to never lose ‘the common touch’ was what made him the remarkable and special man we love so dearly.  His passing leaves an enormous hole in our hearts and he will truly be missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at the Lynn-Stone Funeral Home, 15 Yonge St S, Elmvale Ontario on Saturday, May 4 at 1 pm.

Interment St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Phelpston.
