The Sunny, Dog Days of Summer – Local music, waterfront evenings and simple moments remind us to slow down and enjoy the season
By Kari Belcourt – North Simcoe Springwater News
It’s finally here—the sunny days of July.
After months of snow, rain and waiting, summer has arrived in full force. It’s the season we spend the rest of the year dreaming about. We make long lists of projects to finish, places we’ve always wanted to visit, and friends we’ve promised to see once the weather finally turns warm.
Then the heat arrives.
Suddenly, the very sunshine we’ve been longing for makes it difficult to do much of anything at all. The afternoon sun slows us down, and for a moment the endless to-do list doesn’t seem quite as important.
A song comes on the radio, singing about sunny days and lying in the sun with the music playing. Maybe that’s exactly the reminder we need.
Summer has a funny way of convincing us it’s already slipping away. Cottage weekends fill the calendar, children’s activities seem endless, vacation plans stack up, and before long it feels like we’re running out of time.
But here’s the good news—summer has only just begun.
There is still plenty of time to enjoy a quiet afternoon on the beach, an evening walk through town, ice cream with family, or a concert under the open sky. The chores will still be waiting when the sun goes down.
One of the greatest things about living in North Simcoe is that you don’t have to travel far to experience the best parts of summer. Nearly every community throughout the region offers free live music, family events and opportunities to gather with neighbours while enjoying the beautiful weather.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident or simply visiting Georgian Bay this season, there are countless ways to soak in the sunshine close to home.
Tiny Township – Busk ’til Dusk

As the sun begins to set over Georgian Bay, there’s hardly a better backdrop for an evening of live music.

Wasaga Beach – Summer Sets

Whether you’re spending the day on the world’s longest freshwater beach or simply stopping by for the evening, Summer Sets provides the perfect soundtrack to a relaxing summer night.
Penetanguishene – Bayside Summer Soirée
Friday nights in Penetanguishene offer another opportunity to enjoy live entertainment along the waterfront.
Held at the amphitheatre beside the Penetanguishene Curling Club, the Bayside Summer Soirée combines live music, family entertainment and outdoor movies overlooking beautiful Georgian Bay.
Concerts begin at 6 p.m. and continue throughout the summer.
Upcoming performances include:
- July 17 – Sandra Good Band
- July 24 – The Renaissance Band
- July 31 – Good Ole Boys

- August 28 – The Brudders
With cool evening breezes coming off the bay and the waterfront serving as a natural stage, it’s another reminder that some of the best summer experiences don’t require expensive tickets or long drives.
As July settles in, it’s worth remembering that summer isn’t measured by how many chores get crossed off the list. It’s measured by evenings spent laughing with friends, children dancing to live music, sunsets over Georgian Bay, and those quiet moments where time seems to slow down.
There will always be another lawn to mow, another errand to run or another project waiting at home.
But these sunny days are fleeting.
So grab a lawn chair, take in the music, enjoy the company around you, and maybe even dance a little.
The to-do list will still be there tomorrow. Summer won’t.
