Orillia Shocks Alliston Eliminating the Hornets in 5 Games

Submitted by Jamie Robillard, April 6, 2025

The Orillia Terrier shocked the Alliston Hornets, taking their best of seven Carruthers Division Championship series in five games when they eliminated the Hornets in overtime by a 5-4 score on Friday March 28th.

Dylan Palomaki scored the winning goal just 26 seconds into the extra period to seal the deal for the Terriers.  Palomaki, who leads the Orillia offence in scoring 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points during the playoffs sent the Alliston crowd home disappointed in the result.  This is a surprising upset in a series that the Hornets were huge favourites but that is why they play the games.  Orillia netminder, Reid Thomas had a strong series in goal.

Orillia now advances to the Ontario Hockey Association’s Provincial Junior Hockey League quarter finals and will face the Hanover Barons of the Pollock Division.  Orillia took game one on March 21st winning 3-0 then in game two the Hornets bounced back for a 3-2 victory to even the series at one game apiece.  Game three saw the Terriers double the score on Allison 4-2 on March 24th followed in game four with a narrow 4-3 win over the Hornets on March 26th.  That set up game five where they came out on top by the 5-4 overtime score.

Notes: In the PJHL quarter finals the Terriers took game one by a score of 5-3 over the Barons on April 4th before Hanover tied the series at one game each with a win 4-0 shut out over the Terriers on April 5th.

In the other quarter final rounds, the Grimsby Peach Kings and New Hamburg Firebirds at tied at one game each after two contests, the Napanee Raiders lead the Clarington Eagles one game to none and the Essex 73’s also lead one game to none over the Petrolia Flyers.

In very sobering news Dave Gillespie the President, General Manager and Head Coach of the Midland Flyers has passed away.  Dave was instrumental in pushing the Flyers franchise forward and will greatly missed by his family, the hockey club, the rival teams in the league and the community.  Condolences are pouring in from teams around the PJHL including the Penetang Kings.
