Hospice Huronia: A Place Where Compassion Lives

For more than 30 years, Hospice Huronia has been walking alongside individuals and families facing a life-limiting illness. Since opening its doors in 1993, the organization has become an essential part of the North Simcoe community, serving residents of Midland, Penetanguishene, Tay, Tiny, Beausoleil First Nation, and surrounding areas with compassionate care and unwavering support.
Many people think of hospice only as a place for the final days of life, but Hospice Huronia wants the community to know that its support begins much earlier. As a self-referral hospice, individuals and families are encouraged to reach out as soon as a life-limiting illness is diagnosed. Whether someone needs emotional support, practical guidance, respite, or simply someone to listen, Hospice Huronia offers services throughout the journey, not just at the end.
At the heart of the organization is Tomkins House, the six-bed residential hospice that opened in 2020. Designed to feel like a home rather than a hospital, every detail reflects comfort, dignity, and peace. Bright gathering spaces invite families to spend time together, while beautifully maintained gardens offer moments of quiet reflection.
The ribbons sway gently in the breeze, almost as though they are dancing to music only the heart can hear. Nearby sits the Wind Phone, a quiet place where visitors can speak to someone they have loved and lost. It is a peaceful corner of Hospice Huronia, where grief is met with understanding and every memory is honoured.
Each patient is welcomed with small but meaningful touches. Every bed is covered with a handcrafted quilt donated by local quilters, a reminder that the community itself embraces those who enter its doors.
Behind every service is a dedicated team of 15 full-time staff and more than 100 active volunteers. Trained volunteers visit people in their homes, offering companionship and respite for caregivers through visits of up to three hours. Others lend their talents in the gardens, kitchen, administrative offices, fundraising events, and bereavement programs. Their generosity helps create the warm, welcoming atmosphere for which Hospice Huronia is known.
Support does not end when a loved one dies. Hospice Huronia’s bereavement programs continue to walk beside families as they navigate loss. Each summer and winter, memorial gatherings bring the community together to remember those who have passed. Ribbon ceremonies, bubbles released into the sky, sea glass reflections, acoustic music, and a shared barbecue provide opportunities to celebrate lives well lived while finding comfort in the company of others who understand.
Everything Hospice Huronia provides is offered free of charge, made possible through provincial funding and the remarkable generosity of donors, community partners, and volunteers. Their shared commitment ensures that compassionate end-of-life care is available to everyone who needs it, regardless of financial circumstances.
Hospice Huronia is much more than a building. It is a place where families find comfort, where volunteers give generously of their time, where difficult conversations are met with kindness, and where every life is honoured with dignity.
