Ontario Senior Games – Seniors in the Heart of Tiny

By Lynn Moon, Township of Tiny Senior Advisory Committee Chair

As we grow older, we tend to become less active.  However, this is not the best approach to aging.  There are some of us who investigate ways to maintain our health and make the extra effort to join activities that encourage us to be more active and social.  It has been proven that this is one of the best ways to stay healthy both mentally and physically.  One such organization that is specifically for Seniors aged 55+ is the Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA).  This organization provides events that are similar to the Olympics for Seniors.

The Ontario Senior Games Association is a welcoming and inclusive organization for older adults in Ontario looking to join in friendly, local competition with the opportunity to progress to both Provincial and National competitions in the sport or activity of their choice. This organization is active in over 30 geographic Districts and has over 36 sanctioned events that are sure to entice you no matter where you live or what you are into.  They are always looking to include more participants, volunteers, and supporters. Contact them today and get involved in the fitness for fun of the OSGA Games!

The OSGA is preparing for the Summer Games in Brockville, Ontario from August 17 – 19, 2027.  The summer games events include Bid Euchre, Billiards, Bocce Ball, Carpet Bowling, Walking/Running, Cribbage, Cycling, Darts, Euchre, 5 Pin Bowling, Floor Shuffleboard, Golf, Lawn Bowling, Pickleball, Slo-Pitch, Swimming, and Tennis. The interesting thing about this special event is that anybody over the age of 55 can register for any of the above events and even try more than one.  The only criteria to be a participant is to be a member of the OSGA. They have an Opening and Closing Ceremony just like the Olympics and present gold, silver and bronze medals for all events.

These Games occur every two years and have been designed to attract amateur athletes to help promote an active and healthy lifestyle. The District Summer Games occur annually in 41 Districts across Ontario. The OSGA encourages Seniors to stay physically active through this friendly competition in their favourite sports and promotes the opportunity to try new ones. Participation in sports and activities can broaden your social network and contribute to your cognitive health by connecting you with individuals who share similar interests.
