Welcome to autumn! The time for fresh apples, pumpkin pie, cooler nights and shorter days. Autumn equinox was on Tuesday at 8:04 PM and from now until the Spring equinox we won’t see 12 hours of daylight. In case you were wondering, Spring equinox is on March 20, 2027 at 4:24 PM.
With fall many events come along. Of course here in our community it starts this Saturday, September 26 with the annual Anten Mills Artisan Craft and Food Fair sponsored by the Anten Mills Community Recreation Association under the leadership of Roslyn. Doors will open on Saturday morning at 10 AM and you don’t need to worry about breakfast this morning. For 2 toonies, you will get 2 delicious pancakes along with 2 sausages and the fixings. This breakfast is in support of the Elmvale and District Food Bank so if you can, throw in a bit more than the 2 toonies as you are supporting a great cause.
There will be a variety of items being offered that morning by local crafters. Preserves, wood crafts, knitting, metal work are just some of the items that will be available under the pavilion and along the path. You will need to look for the draw table as instead of charging the vendor for their space, they are required to supply a door prize of a minimum value. Ballots will be available so get your name in and you may receive a wonderful gift.
One of the booths that are a must visit is the Anten Mills CRA. There you can find out more about the community and the events and programs offered. Following up on previous years Anten Mills clothing items, a new logo will be revealed and you will definitely want to order some hoodies, crew necks or T-shirts to show your community pride. There may even be a special item that is being worked on.
At lunchtime it will be time to grab a bowl of fresh and delicious chilli as the best chilli cooks face off to see who has the best in the village. From noon until 1 in the community centre for a $5 donation you get to sample the offerings and vote on which one you think is the finest.

Last week the CRA met to discuss potential Halloween events. It was noted that the demographics are changing in the village and as children get a bit older, the parents have different priorities and are unable to commit to volunteering for this event. There are some Halloween enthusiasts in the village and they have stepped up to ensure that the Halloween kids party will continue. Max is heading up the event this year which will be held on Sunday, October 25 from 11AM to 1PM at the community centre and pavilion. There will be pumpkin carving, games and crafts and the little ones will be able to take a goodie bag home with them. Many of our community events are held without a cost to the participants. This is because as a community we receive our support through great residents and from those who post messages on the community board along Wilson. In response when holding an event such as the kids Halloween party, it is requested that those attending bring a donation for the Elmvale and District Food Bank. Admission to the kids Halloween party will be a donation for the food bank which we hope you will understand and fully support. Max will be looking for some assistance with the event and there will be preregistration required to ensure that there are sufficient supplies and pumpkins for those attending.
It is interesting to note that Yogi, Cindy and BoBo bears were very quiet this year. There were a few sightings but not as many as in previous years. They must have found a good source for food. What was interesting was that a moose was seen not too far from the village last week. Who knew that a moose would be tramping around in our area.
Next Monday, September 28, the fire service is asking you to do a task that could save your family. September 28 is Save by the Beep day. Take a few minutes and with your family, test your smoke alarms and make certain that they are working. At the same time review your family fire safety plan so everyone knows what to do and where to go in the event of an alarm sounding. Heating season is here and while a fire doesn’t have a particular season, they frequently happen more when heating appliances are working. Do yourself and your family a favour and check your smoke alarms.
