Penetanguishene Council Report

April 20, 2024 – On April 10, 2024, the Penetanguishene Council held a meeting at council chambers located at, 10 Robert Street in Penetanguishene.

Special Council meeting was held first with council receiving memo from the Director of Human Resources regarding the Penetanguishene volunteer firefighters’ association negotiation update, Council also received a memo from Director of Public Works regarding the Fuller Avenue pole anchor easement expropriation update.

Regular Council meeting followed at 7pm, were in the open forum 1 resident participated, bring up concerns regarding traffic calming proposals on 3 local streets. Some of the concerns were that the owner of a vehicle not the drive would receive a fine, the privacy of individuals as their photo and information could be compromised by government overreach. Also, this was not what was promised, more police presence in the community.

Council held a public meeting regarding the draft affordable and sustainable community improvement plan. One individual, provide a concern that the CIP did not include people with disabilities and behavior issues, this concern was noted by council.

Council approved that staff report back with recommendations on the results of the public meeting on the draft affordable and sustainable community improvement plan.

Council approved the following recommended appointment to the Southern Geogian Bay OPP detachment board:

Doug Taylor- Community Representative

Mayor Doug Rawson- Council Representative

Council requested support regarding the North Correctional Centre policing cost from the association of Municipalities of Ontario, the County of Simcoe, neighbouring municipalities, and other municipalities who are host to Provincial facilities.

Mayor Doug Rawson explained that in 2001 when the Central North correction facility opened the province committed to recover all cost with policing associated with the facility to the town of Penetanguishene. In 2020 the ministry of the Solicitor General canceled agreements to recover policing cost associated for all correction institutions. This cost is now covered by an increase to taxi levy on local residences and Business of Penetanguishene.

Council approved the committee of whole report from March 13,2024.
